Unfinished Business: Ghosts and Spirits The average person may think of ghosts and spirits as something disguised in a white sheet with holes for eyes, a ragged figure dragging chains and moaning. In addition, something floating through the air and that can enter and exit rooms without the need to open doors.

The stories are infamous: Bloody Mary, vanishing hitchhikers, stories of chairs and lamps being flung about by an unseen force; we’ve heard them since childhood. It has been wondered why we, as humans, love the feeling of being scared so much.

The word “ghost” has many connotations connected to it in the American culture. One could mean the scary or friendly fictional ghosts of Halloween or one could mean the more serious and controversial creature, the spirit of a dead person stuck in between earth and the afterlife.

The belief was started by the concept of the souls from the Near East religions (which, were influenced from the ancient Greek religion). In ancient Mesopotamian culture, death was considered ‘no turning back point’.
